Chadbourn man enters plea in child sex case

A guilty plea in a sex crime case could leave a Chadbourn man in prison for the next 19 years, District Attorney Jon David announced Friday.
Vester Junior Brown, 33, entered the guilty plea in Superior Court in Whiteville to attempted first degree sex offense in a deal offered by the state and approved by the mother of the victim, identified only as a 5-year-old family member, David said in a news release.
Brown was ordered to serve between 141 and 230 months in prison, 11.75 to 19.1 years, with a 30-year listing on the state’s sex offender registry upon his release.
Brown admitted to detectives early in their investigation that he had sexual intercourse with the child at least twice, David said. The mother agreed to the plea deal to spare her child from having to testify, David said. She testified that the incidents had an impact on her child, and she feared for the child’s continued well being.
