Gunshots that killed a Loris man near Watson Park Wednesday evening was heard by an officer just moments after conducting a security check of the area, Loris Police Chief Gary Buley said Thursday.
In the moments it took for the officer to return, the driver of a car struck by multiple gunshots was gone, a man was left in the passenger seat gravely injured, Buley said.
Shaquan Cox, 20, of Loris was taken to McLeod Loris hospital, where he died at 8:40 p.m., less than an hour after he was shot, Horry County Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard said.
Buley said the shooting appeared to be a drive-by in an area with a violent history including previous shootings.
Still working leads on the case, Buley said he is “confident” of an arrest in the killing of Shaquan Cox.
Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact the Loris Police Department.
Three more shot
Three more people were shot near Loris later Wednesday evening, at about 9 p.m.
That shooting, off of Hwy 746, left the victims with injuries that did not appear to be life threatening, Horry County Public Information Officer Kelly More said.
Calling the investigation active, Moore said there is “no threat to the community.”
It was not clear if the two shooting incidents were related, or coincidence.
