Fireworks capped a patriotic program with hot dogs and watermelon just right for the area’s first Fourth of July celebration, three days early, at South Columbus High School Thursday.

Those taking part enjoyed music from the Columbus County Community Band, the Kevin Sanson Band, and much more.

Rain that worried organizers earlier in the afternoon gave way to a comfortable evening at Civitan Stadium and crowds rivalling any in the past, a clear indication that area residents are ready for a return to normal after more than a year of pandemic living.
