An inmate at Tabor Correctional Institution died early Wednesday of an apparent suicide, the NC Department of Public Safety reported.
Malek Moore, 29, “was found unresponsive in his cell around 4:34 a.m.,” a DPS news release said. Prison first responders “performed lifesaving measures until local paramedics arrived who also worked to resuscitate the offender and pronounced Moore deceased at 4:56 a.m.”
An investigation by the Tabor City Police Department is ongoing, but not expected to find anything but a self-inflicted death, Maj. Russell Conway said.
“There was surveillance video on the cell,” Conway said. “Nobody went in our out but him.”
While cooperating with the local law enforcement investigation, DPS “is also conducting its own investigation,” the news release said.
Convicted as a habitual felon in Guilford County, Moore was admitted to prison on March 18, 2015 to serve an eight-year term, and had a projected release date of June 8, 2022.
