A late afternoon accident on the waters of Lake Tabor left a boat racer with serious injuries, witnesses on the scene said.

Emergency personnel were called to the lake just before 5:30 p.m. for the boating accident, the victim taken by ambulance to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center in Myrtle Beach, the nearest trauma center.

Witnesses said one of a series of boat races is scheduled for the lake next weekend, and the boater hurt Sunday was getting in some practice time ahead of the event.

A North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission officer was summoned to handle the investigation. Only the pointed bow of the boat could be seen above the water as rain pounded and thunder rumbled.
