A domestic violence call escalated quickly Wednesday as the Loris Police Department was faced with a man holding a gun to his own head.

With assistance from the Horry County Police Department Samuel Gene Long, 43, was taken safely into custody, Loris police chief Gary Buley said.

Police arrived in the 2000 block of Main Street at 12:30 p.m. Feb. 5, Buley said. When officers made contact with and attempted to arrest him, Long pointed a handgun to his head.

“Due to the risk of the neighbors and the public, I requested support from the Horry County Police Special Operations,” Buley said. “Upon arrival, negotiations continued and eventually Long gave-up without further incident.”

Long was taken to the J. Reuben Long Detention Center near Conway and charged with domestic violence in the first degree, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, and felony possession of a firearm.
