‘Possible duplicate voter registration’ probed

By DEUCE NIVEN
A “possible duplicate voter registration” has been brought to the attention of the Columbus County Board of Elections, County Attorney Mike Stephens said Thursday.
State Board of Elections officials notified the local board, Stephens said.
County elections officials are “looking into this matter,” Stephens said in a written statement prepared for an meeting Thursday evening of the Columbus County Board of Elections.
Because the investigation could involve “criminal misconduct,” Stephens said he would not say who might have been registered to vote twice, or divulge other circumstances.
Findings of the county board will be turned over to the State Board of Elections, and to the District Attorney if evidence of a crime is uncovered, Stephens said.
