Heavy rain and flood warnings have again forced cancellation of District 9 Dixie Softball Tournament play in Tabor City.
Rained out games from the weekend, already cancelled on Monday, are off again for Tuesday night, with Dixie officials hoping for a 6 p.m. start on Wednesday, July 3, at the Tabor City Athletic Complex. League officials plan to meet Tuesday night to determine how to proceed with the tournament. State tournament action is slated to begin on Friday, July 12.
UPDATE, July 1: With rain falling and forecast for more throughout the day, District 9 Dixie Softball officials have again cancelled tournament play they had hoped to resume Monday night.
“We’re going to try again for 6 o’clock Tuesday,” South Columbus Dixie Girls President Melisa Sykes said Monday. “We’ll have to look at it again tomorrow.”
Tournament play began Thursday, and there have been rain delays throughout. Action Friday at the Tabor city Athletic Complex ended after midnight.
A downpour Saturday ended play before 5 p.m., and all of Sunday’s scheduled games were cancelled.
Tournament officials hope to resume play Tuesday evening, and either conclude the tournament then, or play one more day to determine winners in the various brackets. State playoffs are scheduled to begin Friday, July 12.
Severe weather that would later prompt tornado warnings to the east of Tabor City, and spawned a deluge over the Tabor City Athletic Complex, stopped play in the Region 9 Dixie Girls Softball tournament Saturday.
With the threat of rain and severe weather high on Sunday, play has been put off until 6 p.m. Monday, July 1, South Columbus Dixie Girls President Melisa Sykes said.
“I don’t know how we’ll get all the games in,” Sykes said. “We’re going to try.”
All four South Columbus Dixie Girls teams – the Darlings, Angels, Ponytails, and Belles – remain in play and are scheduled for action at 6 p.m. Monday.
