Avie Lee Huggins: Tabor City

    Avie Lee Herring Huggins of Tabor City died Monday, Aug. 5, in Summit Place Assisted Living in Little River. She was 90.
    Born in Nixonville on Dec. 11, 1922, she was the daughter of the late James Burley Herring and Alice Margaret Roberts Herring. She was preceded in death by three sisters and eight brothers.
    Mrs. Huggins finished Loris High School in 1940 and pursued her college degree at McIntyre School of Cosmetic Art in Bennettesville. She graduated from Charlotte Cosmetic School of Fine Arts.
    She operated MiLady’s Beauty Shop in Loris for several years.
    After marriage, she was a homemaker for her three sons and a teacher’s aide with the Columbus County School System in Tabor City. She was the owner of Avie’s Catering Service for 40 years and published the Special Occasions Cookbook in 1983.
    She will be forever missed by her family and friends, but her legacy will far outreach the years of her life through those that she impacted and taught. Even in her final hours, she praised God by singing hymns and speaking about her hope of heaven.
    She is survived by her husband, Claude Huggins; three sons, Claudius Edmond Huggins Jr. and wife BJ of Cary, Douglas Randall Huggins and wife Pam of Southport, and Dennis Myers Huggins and wife Jan of Wilkesboro; nine grandchildren, Ashley Summerlin Park and husband Steele, Chrissie Huggins Wills and husband Forrest, Jeffrey Summerlin and wife Stacey, Doug Huggins and wife Alison, Amanda Huggins Gleason and husband Matt, Heath Summerlin, Jeffrey Huggins, Abigail Huggins and Andrew Huggins; and six great-grandchildren, Abrey Park, Evan Gleason, Logan Wills, Zoe Park, Rustic Summerlin and Bentley Summerlin.
    Visitation was scheduled from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 7, in the Tabor City Baptist Church Fellowship Hall.
    Funeral services were to follow at 2 p.m. in Tabor City Baptist Church, with Rev. Bruce Schmidt, with burial to follow in Green Sea Cemetery.
