Vela Mayola Hardee Wood: Smithfield

    Vela Mayola Hardee Wood of Smithfield passed away Thursday, Feb. 6 in Smithfield following an illness. She was 74.
     Mrs. Wood was born on March 5, 1939 in Loris, the daughter of Mr. William Mayo Hardee and Mrs. Attie Arjane Cox Hardee. Mrs. Woods was a member of Wilson’s Mills Baptist Church and the Wendell Chapter 87, Order of the Eastern Star.
    Survivors include two brothers, William Joyce Hardee of Loris, and Defford Dale Hardee of Creedmoor; four sisters, Elga Russ of Sanford, Leatis Smith and Carolyn Edwards of Rock Hill, and Doris Piver of Tabor City, and many loving nieces, nephews and dear friends.
    In addition to her parents, Mrs. Wood was predeceased in death by her husband, J. Cleavon Wood; three brothers, John Watis Hardee, Avery Dalton Hardee, and Shelton Hardee and two sisters, Mary Fipps and Iris Sarvis.
     Graveside services were held 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9 at Hardee Family Cemetery with Pastor Haywood Fowler officiating.
    Memorials may be made to Wilson’s Mills Baptist Church, 652 Swift Creek Rd., Smithfield, NC 27577 or to the charitable organization of your choice.
