Fisherman drowns in Whiteville pond

By DEUCE NIVEN

An elderly man fishing in a pond near his Whiteville home drowned after slipping into the water Friday afternoon, Columbus County Assistant Coroner William Hannah said.
Daniel Carl Walters, 67, of Hickory Road in the Southwood subdivision, apparently slipped into a pond just across U.S. 701 from the housing development about 6 p.m. Friday, Hannah said.
Walters often fished in the pond, driving a golf cart from his home, despite some health problems, Hannah said. It appears that Walters dropped a four-footed cane he used to steady himself in the pond, then slipped into the water as he tried to retrieve it, Walters said.
Someone nearby who had noticed Walters fishing realized the man was gone, prompting the search, Hannah said. Rescue workers recovered the body about an hour later.
