Cherry Grove crash claims man

UPDATE: James Robert Bowman, 60, of Winston-Salem, died in Tuesday afternoon’s crash, Trooper Melvin Campbell of the North Carolina Highway Patrol said. His wife, Susan Bowman, 51, suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken by helicopter to New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington.
James Bowman ran the stop sign on Strickland Road at NC 904, traveling into the path of a car driven by a Tabor City man. The driver’s door of Bowman’s car took the brunt of the impact.
No charges will be filed, Campbell said.

A two-car crash on N.C. 904 near Cherry Grove after 2 p.m. Tuesday claimed an out-of-town motorist, injured his wife and the driver of the second vehicle.
As an AirLink helicopter prepared to take the wife to New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, the couple’s dogs were taken by Fair Bluff Fire & Rescue personnel in a personal vehicle to a Cerro Gordo veterinarian office.
Cerro Gordo took the other driver, who did not appear seriously injured, to McLeod Loris hospital. Tabor City Emergency Services packaged the wife and met AirLink at a landing zone established at the nearby Strickland Corn Maze.
A North Carolina Highway Patrol investigation was underway Tuesday afternoon.
