Geneva Cooke Smith: Loris

1919 – 2015
Geneva Cooke Smith of Loris passed away Monday, Oct. 19 at Loris Extended Care Center following an illness. She was 96.
Mrs. Smith was born on March 24, 1919 in Loris, a daughter of the late Lide V. Cooke and the late Frances Ella James Cooke. Mrs. Smith retired from Loris Community Hospital with 30 years of dedicated service. Mrs. Smith was a longtime active member of Beulah Baptist Church where she taught and was the last surviving member of the Adult Ladies Sunday School Class.
Mrs. Smith was an expert seamstress and proved to be very innovative when it came to sewing, cooking, carpentry and gardening. Her children will remember her unwavering and unconditional love of family which they along with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren returned back to her many times over.
Survivors include her children, Kenneth (Priscilla) Smith, Don (Donna) Smith, Hilda (Arnold) Formy Duval, Jean Marangelli, Gary (Susie) Smith, Frances (Jerry) Anderson and Marsha Fowler; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one sister, Pecolia Gaskins and one sister-in-law, Mae Ellis Todd.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Smith was predeceased by her husband, William Clyde Smith; two brothers, Johnny Cooke and Hosea Cooke and two sisters, Laomi Blanton and Emily Todd.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt “Thank You” to Mercy Hospice, Dr. Chuck Mills, Dr. Kimberly Drayton, as well as her caregiver of many years, Naomi Minor and all of the staff at Loris Extended Care Center for their tremendous love and compassionate care.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 22 at Beulah Baptist Church with Pastor Joe Rogers officiating. Committal services followed at Carter Cemetery.
