Mary Strickland Phillips: Surf City

1927 – 2016

    Mary Strickland Phillips of Surf City died Wednesday, June 29 at her home. She was 89.
    She was born on April 5, 1927 in Horry County, the daughter of the late Joseph Hybert Strickland and Lucy Ellen Williamson Strickland.
    Also remembered is her husband, Hoyt Phillips, a son, Mickey Phillips; four brothers and five sisters, all of who preceded her in death.
    Surviving is her son, Bobby Phillips and wife Anita and her daughter, Wanda Oliver, all of Surf City; three grandchildren, Kenny Waters, Denny Phillips and John Phillips; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a brother, James Howard Strickland of Jacksonville, Florida; and a daughter-in-law, Cindy.
    Mary lived in Jacksonville, Florida for many years where she worked for JC Penney and Walgreens before retiring to Surf City. She was a member of Barlow Vista Baptist Church where she was a member of the Piecemakers Quilting ministry where she made many good friends. She was also a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Florida and was involved with the children’s program for many years.
    A funeral service was planned for 10 a.m. Saturday, July 2 at Barlow Vista Baptist Church, with burial following at 2 p.m. in Riverside Cemetery, Nichols.
