Dr. Hoyt McMillan Housand, Sr.: Georgetown
1935 – 2016
Dr. Hoyt McMillan Housand, Sr. of Georgetown, husband of Barbara Soles Housand, passed away Saturday, July 16, at his home. He was 81.
Dr. Housand was born Jan. 2, 1935 in Loris, a son of the late Charles Blune Housand and Ethel Prince Housand.
Having grown up on his family’s tobacco farm, he was very proud of his agrarian heritage.
Dr. Housand was a 1952 graduate of Loris High School, attended The Citadel and graduated from The Illinois College of Optometry.
He was a man that gave freely of himself, serving as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, and taking part in a mission trip to Brazil.
Dr. Housand was also a charter member of the Loris Jaycees and volunteer with The Boy Scouts of America.
His family moved to Georgetown and opened Georgetown Optical and Vision Center in 1988. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Georgetown.
Dr. Housand retired in 2008 enjoy his family, fishing and working in his yard.
Surviving in addition to his wife of 60 years are, a daughter, Sabrina Katie Housand of Seattle, Washington; a son, Hoyt McMillan Housand, Jr. (Wendy) of Georgetown; two grandsons, Mac Housand (Brooke), Alex Housand (Crissy); one granddaughter, Montana Housand; two great-grandchildren, Grayson and David; a sister, Lois Collins (Nelson) of Charleston; a brother, Eston Housand of Loris; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 19
A memorial service was planned for 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 19, at Graham Funeral Home in Georgetown. Visitation was planned for the hour prior to the service in the funeral home.
