Franklin Lavon Smith: Oak Island

1950 – 2016

    Franklin Lavon Smith of Oak Island passed away Tuesday, Aug. 9 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington. He was 65.
    Mr. Smith was born in Loris, son of Mary Lucille Monroe Smith and the late Leo Smith, Sr. He faithfully enjoyed working as a construction manager at Progress Energy until his retirement in January 2015. Mr. Smith enjoyed fishing, golfing, and working in his yard where he grew many varieties of flowers and trees. He also enjoyed visiting neighborhood friends. Mr. Smith’s real passion was cooking, and loved to make his favorite seafood and steak meals to share with his family. He was preceded in death by a son Shaun Holley.
    Leaving to cherish his memory is his wife Cindy Smith of Oak Island; children, Michelle Williams and husband Duff of Nichols, Gaberial Smith and wife Michelle of Loris, and Shane Smith of Loris; mother, Lucille Smith of Premiere Living in Lake Waccamaw; brothers, Leo Smith Jr. and wife Janice of Tabor City, Reverend Kenneth Smith and wife Diane of Tabor City, Paul Smith and wife Gloria of N. Myrtle Beach, and Terry Smith and wife Jenise of Tabor City; sister Patricia Fowler of Tabor City; nine grandchildren, Kaylyn, Deklan, Aniston, Gage, Kiersten, Garrison, Beth, Samantha, and Ashley; and several nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services were planned for 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12 at the Chapel of Peacock-Newnam & White Funeral and Cremation Service in Southport, with entombment following in Cape Fear Memorial Park.
    Family planned to receive friends during the hour prior to the service in the funeral home.
