Joseph Aloysious Smith: Loris

1928 – 2016
Joseph Aloysious Smith of Loris passed away Monday, Sept. 19 at Magnolia’s of Myrtle Beach. He was 87.
Mr. Smith was born on Nov. 2, 1928 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of the late William Smith and the late Ida Mae Stringfellow. Mr. Smith retired from the Department of Highways with the State of Delaware and was of the Catholic Faith.
Mr. Smith served his country with courage, honor and distinction in the United States Army in both WWII and Korea. He achieved the rank of Master Sergeant and earned numerous military awards, decorations and medals including the WWII Victory-Army Occupation Germany and Japan, Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Star, United Nations Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Presidential Unit Citation, U.S., Presidential Citation Award, Korea, Korean Service Award, Five Battle Stars and the National Defense Medal.
After his military service, Mr. Smith served with the Civil Air Patrol achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He earned the Commander’s Commendation Award, Garber Award, Air Force Association Citation Award and Delaware Wing Member of the Year while in the Civil Air Patrol.
Survivors include his wife, Joan Haltaman Smith of the home; son, Joseph James “Joe” Smith and wife, Terry of Dallas, Texas; two daughters, Tina Smith of Wilmington, Delaware and Pat Chance and husband, Ernie of Annapolis, Maryland; step-son, Brent Truitt and wife, Jennifer; seven grandchildren, Jennifer, Eric, Rachel, Danielle, Alex, Nicolas and Shannon and three great-grandchildren and two dogs, Bogey and Bella.
Mr. Smith would also like to give special thanks to his caregivers, Sabrina Ganous and Amy Winston and best friends, Ron and Sandy Pierce.
Mr. Smith was predeceased by his parents, three brothers and one sister.
Funeral services, with military honors, were planned for 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 26 at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear, Delaware.
