John Donnie Cox, Sr.: Tabor City

1923 – 2017

    John “Don” Donnie Cox, Sr. of Tabor City passed away Friday, Jan. 6, at his home. He was 93.
    Mr. Cox was born April 4, 1923 in Tabor City, a son of the late John Graddie and Mary Caroline Gore Cox. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy where he served during World War II as a gunner on a battleship.
    Mr. Cox was a longtime tobacco farmer and an avid deer hunter. He was always willing to lend a hand to a fellow neighbor or friend in need. He will be missed by his companion, his Chihuahua Moses.
    Mr. Cox was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.
    He was predeceased by one bother, L.B. Cox; and two sisters, Faustina Williamson and Ruby Cox.
     Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Cynthia “Sandy” Marie Cox of Tabor City; his children, Brenda Cox Gore (Paul, Jr.) and John “Johnny” Donnie Cox, Jr. (Cookie) of Tabor City, Cynthia Darlene Cox Brice (Jeffrey) of Myrtle Beach, Frank Grady Cox (Elaine) of Longs, and Donna Marie Cox Sarvis (Wayne) of Loris; his sister, Mavis Butler Coleman of Durham; his grandchildren, Darren Gore (Kim), Don Gore (Pam), Chris Cox (Pam), C.J. Cox (Gail), Anna Cox, Jenny Mulcahy (Jason), Landon Brice (Dana), Lauren Brice, Jason Cox, Steven Cox, and Josh Sarvis, his great grandchildren, Cole Gore, Caroline Gore, Cade Gore, Jessica Gore, Steven Cox (Bethany), Delanie Cox, Kristen Cox, Ethan Cox, Zack Cox, Morgan Cox, Clay Cox, Riley Mulcahy, and Taylor Mulcahy.
    Funeral services were planned for 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 8, at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Loris Chapel with Rev. Haywood Fowler officiating. Committal services, with military honors, were to follow in Cox Cemetery.
    Family planned to receive friends during the hour prior to the service in the funeral home.
