Hubert Gordan“ Doc.” Dameron of Tabor City passed away on Friday, Dec. 15 in McLeod Loris hospital. He was 94.
Doc was born in Star on Jan. 27, 1923 to Dr. Ernest Lee and Mary McGimsey Dameron.
After graduating from Star High School, he attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Pharmacy where he was President of the Class of 1945.
Doc and his late wife, Lois Odum Dameron, moved to Tabor City in 1946 and established Dameron Drug Store. Dameron was a member of the Tabor City Town Council, Mayor and served on the Columbus County Board of Education. Dameron was a charter member of Tabor City Civitan Club and has been a member of Tabor City Baptist Church for more than 60 years, where he served as a lifetime deacon.
He was a dedicated family man, devoted Christian, and a loyal friend to many. Doc frequently ended his prayers with “Help us to be mindful of the needs of others.”
Doc’s greatest joys were attending UNC football and basketball events and interacting with friends and customers at the drug store. He even continued to keep his pharmacist license at the age of 94.
He is survived by his children, Richard (Margaret Ann) Dameron, David (Sheryl) Dameron, and Phyllis (Onnie) Gore; eight grandchildren, Dr. Jason (Marla) Dameron, Ann (Jason) MacDonald, Ethan (Jenny) Dameron, Erin Gore, Matthew Gore, Michael Gore, Morgan Dameron, and Michael Dameron; eight great-grandchildren; and special friend Miona Fonvielle.
He was pre-deceased by his wife, Lois Jeanette Dameron; son, Dr. Frank Lee Dameron; sister, Julia Dameron Freeman; and brother, Dr. Joseph Thomas Dameron.
Visitation was planned from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 19, at Tabor City Baptist Church.
Funeral services were planned for 2 p.m., after visitation, with burial following at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
