Mary Gooden Ward: Clarkton

1931 – 2022

     Mary Gooden Ward of Clarkton went home to be with her Lord after a short stay at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Angel House in Whiteville on Saturday, Aug. 6. She was 91.

     Mary was born May 23, 1931 to the late Walter Alden and Ruth Hayes Gooden.

     She was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, John M. Ward; sisters Louise Maiden, Betsy Barfield, Frances Adams; brothers James Gooden and McAulay Gooden, and a grandson.

     She is survived by one son, Billy M. Ward of Clarkton; a daughter, Geri W. Weldon of Ocean Isle Beach; a brother-in-law; nine grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and numerous loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.

     A memorial service was planned for 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 14, at Clarkton Presbyterian Church. Family will memorialize both John and Mary Ward during this service because the pandemic prevented a service for John in 2020, and in honor of their 72-year marriage.

     Family planned to receive friends following the service at the church.

     Family asks that memorials be made to Clarkton Presbyterian Church or the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Angel House in Whiteville.
