Billy Lee Suggs: Loris

1935 – 2023

     Billy Lee Suggs of Loris passed away on Friday, Jan. 13, at McLeod Loris hospital surrounded by family and friends. He was 87.

     Mr. Suggs was born June 19, 1935 on the Suggs family farm in Loris to the late Thelbert R. Suggs and Lillian Bell Suggs. He was predeceased by brothers James H. Suggs, Dr. T. R. Suggs, and Charlie T. Suggs, and sister Zonnie M. Suggs.

     Surviving are his wife of 40 years, Maxilene Strickland Suggs; three children, Sandra Suggs Cartrette and Vanessa Leigh Suggs of Conway, and Billy Lee “Scooter” Suggs, II of Loris; brothers Denzel Suggs of Loris and Dennis Suggs of West Columbia; sisters Jean Clemmons of Myrtle Beach and Vonda Engelhardt of Gretna, Louisiana; two grandsons; two great-granddaughters.

     Mr. Suggs was a veteran of the United States Army Reserves where he served honorably for six years.

     Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 16, at Loris First Baptist Church with LeVerne Ward, Rev. Bruce Adams, and Rev. Kyle Powell officiating.
