A political newcomer and Loris City Council veteran are headed for an April 9 runoff to fill a vacancy on the panel following Tuesday’s special election.
Kelli Gerald claimed 145 votes in her first bid for public office, ahead of former council member Jan Vescovi with 128 votes, unofficial totals from Tuesday’s balloting showed.
Marshall Russell, a former Loris police chief, took just 20 bids in his first run for elected office.
Gerald’s vote total was just shy of the 50 percent plus 1 vote needed to avoid a runoff, with 49.32 percent of the total, the unofficial totals showed.
All three candidates were seeking the seat formerly held by Mayor Michael Suggs, who won the city’s top job last November.
Grateful
Gerald said she was grateful for those who came out to vote in what was a very low turnout.
“I want to share my true appreciation for everyone who supported, campaigned and voted for me during this election,” Gerald said. “I am asking for the same support on Tuesday, April 9.
“My main goals have been to gain trust with the citizens of Loris, while working with the new administration across the board. Accountability for everyone is also important, along with transparency within our local government.
“Infrastructure and continued support for the recreation department are also valued efforts I intend to pursue if elected. I will listen and strive to use my seat to improve the city of Loris.”
Vescovi, who lost her council seat in last November’s election, said she, too, appreciated her supporters.
“Thank you to everyone who cast their vote for me in the election,” Vescovi said. “Your support is the fuel that drives my passion for our city, its citizens, and its businesses.
“As we head into the runoff, I am more committed than ever to championing your priorities: fostering growth, enhancing our recreation facilities, ensuring public safety, and strengthening our infrastructure.
“Together, Let’s build a brighter future for our beloved city.”
