Christmas is past, but Tabor City’s 12 Days of Christmas ice skating rink will take another spin during the town’s inaugural New Year’s Eve Yam Drop on Wednesday, Dec. 31.
Sponsored by town government, Yam Drop activities are scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Garrell Depot, site of the Christmas ice skating opportunity on the artificial rink. Cool temperatures are expected, not nearly cold enough for ice during the program, but the artificial rink makes the weather much less relevant, town Promotions Director Dianne N. Ward said.
In addition to ice skating other games for kids are promise, a S’Mores bar, food trucks, and music from DJ Mitchell Strickland are expected.
Tabor City Fire Department’s Ladder 11 will drop the lighted ball, topped with a celebratory “Yam” for the home of the North Carolina Yam Festival at Tabor City, at 8 p.m. Firefighters on Monday were practicing the 94 foot drop, working to get the timing just right, Chief Jeff Fowler said.
