Tropical Storm Debby continued her slow churn into the region Wednesday, with a second landfall expected somewhere near Georgetown Wednesday evening, the National Weather Service reported.
With rainfall picking up during the afternoon, and some forecasts of 10 inches of rain or more, Mayor Royce Harper ordered a curfew for Wednesday and Thursday nights, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
“Tabor City will be directly hit with tropical storm force winds and excessive rainfall, with a possibility of flash flooding, riverine flooding, tornadoes, and other extreme weather,” the order from town government said. “Peak conditions for extreme weather are expected to occur during the night Wednesday, August 7, and continue through Thursday.”
A nighttime curfew is “effective immediately,” the order said. “During this period of extreme hazard, pedestrian traffic is restricted and vehicular traffic will be avoided unless absolutely necessary,” the order from town government said.
Patience was encouraged for anyone seeking assistance during the storm.
Municipal and emergency services are strained more during disaster than at any other time,” the order said. “First responders may be unable to reach some aeras and their response times will be higher. This order is intended to minimize the number of potentially involved persons and eliminate the operation of motor vehicles in high winds and high and moving water.”
Look for updates as necessary during the storm, and coverage in next week’s Tabor-Loris Tribune in print and online.
