Three cases of West Nile Virus detected in Columbus County during the last month has prompted mosquito control spraying in Tabor City planned for the evening of Tuesday, Sept. 3.

Spraying will begin at about 7 p.m., a public advisory from town government issued Saturday said.

“Mosquito control spraying is a vital public health measure to prevent the spread of mosquito-borne illnesses,” the advisory said while referencing the recent West Nile Virus cases. “This program is a response to the growth in mosquito population post- Hurricane Debby and the presence of West Nile Virus. We hope that this measure will serve to protect resident’s health and safety.

“While mosquitos are the primary targets of this program, insecticides are potentially harmful to other insects. We encourage residents to take individual action to prepare for said spraying.”

It was not clear Saturday if additional sprayings will take place in the coming weeks.
