Public schools in Columbus and Horry will hold classes remotely Thursday, some for a second day due to a winter storm that left roadways snow covered Tuesday night.

Most students in the Columbus County Schools were out Wednesday for a previously scheduled teacher work day, that day for staff scuttled by the winter storm who could not work remotely.

CCS high school students will be starting the second semester remotely, an announcement from district spokesperson Kelly Jones said. They should log onto Google Classroom and click the “join” button to connect with new classes, Jones said.

Students in the lower grades “should log in to Google Classroom for further instructions,” Jones said.

Those with schedule issues should contact their school counselor by email. Students or staff who need technical support should email ccssupport@columbus.k12.nc.us, or call 910-499-0080.

Students in the Horry County Schools will be in eLearning classes for the second day Thursday, district spokesperson Lisa Bourcier said.

“Students who are unable to participate due to power outages, lack of a personal learning device or internet service, or other barriers, will have the opportunity to complete assignments at a later day,” Bourcier said.

All athletic and other extracurricular events will be re-scheduled during remote learning day for both districts.

Southeastern Community College will also be on remote learning Thursday.

Other closings announced Wednesday, Jan. 22, include:

  • Columbus County government offices will remain closed Thursday.
  • Courts in Columbus County will be closed Thursday, cases rescheduled and notifications sent to each defendant’s last known address, Clerk of Court Jess Hill said.
  • Horry County government offices will remain closed on Thursday, including Solid Waste Authority facilities like the landfill and recycling centers.

Decisions on schedules for Friday are expected to be made Thursday afternoon.
