Williams Township Fire Department and Whiteville Rescue Unit members arrived not long after the incident, shortly after 3 p.m. Columbus County Emergency Services Director Kay Stephens and county Fire Marshal Shannon Blackman arrived a short time later. A Columbus County Sheriff’s Office deputy, possibly the WTS School Resource Officer, was among the first to arrive.
A broad shade tree off of the highway and a cool breeze provided a comfortable place for the students, most who were seated following the incident, as emergency personnel checked on their well-being.
An investigation by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol was underway late Monday afternoon.
