Peggy Norris Davenport: Spartanburg
Peggy Norris Davenport of Spartanburg passed away on Saturday, Dec. 8 at Spartanburg Regional Hospital. She was 94.
She was the wife of the late Guy Ralph Davenport of 58 years and the daughter of the late Lewis and Mary Fletcher Grainger of Tabor City.
Born on February 6, 1918 in Tabor City, Mrs. Davenport was a graduate of Boggy Hill High School and Spartanburg General Hospital School of Nursing, the Class of 1945. She started her nursing career working for the late Dr. A.K. Temples and as a private duty nurse. She was a member of the Spartanburg General Hospital Nurses Alumni Association.
In 1977, she, her husband Guy and son Ralph started Davenport Glass Service Center. She served as President of the company. “Mrs. D”, known by her employees, continue to go to work up to three months ago.
Mrs. Davenport was a member of the Morningside Baptist Church and Lydia Sunday School Class.
She is survived by her son, Former Representative G. Ralph Davenport and wife Jean Rogers of Boiling Springs, SC and her daughter Peggy and husband James O. Prince, Jr. of Spartanburg; three grandchildren, James O. Prince, III “Jay” of Spartanburg, Sarah Elizabeth Davenport of Boiling Springs, SC; four great grandchildren, Eryn Skyler Staples, Morgen Hoover, Jason Hoover and Bella Sophia Howland.
Mrs. Davenport was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Mamie N. Cox, Tabor City, Clydie Lucille Norris, Tabor City, Myrtle Soles, Tabor City, Sue Dell N. Cannon, Loris, Edith Cleo N. Blackburn, Loris, Cloteal N. Gore, Tabor City, Sterling “Pete” Norris, Tabor City, Ruth N. Brice, Tabor City, Floyd Norris, Newport, Tate Norris, Tabor City, Marjorie Graham, Chula Vista, Calif., and Burdon Norris, Tabor City. She was also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Visitation was planned from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11 in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Heritage Chapel Mausoleum in Spartanburg. Entombment was to follow at 11 a.m., conducted by the Rev. Dr. Kirk H. Neely.

The family would like to thank the Spartanburg Regional Emergency Room staff lead by Dr. Campbell and Dr. Manny, their staff of nurses and technicians who took the up most professional care of Mrs. Davenport. Also the 5th flood Heart Center nurses – Michelle 1, Michelle 2, Christy and CAN’s Cindy and Kayla and the wonderful Doctors who kept watch over her. Now, we know why mother loved nursing and the medical profession. She would be so proud of the young members of former profession.
We would also like to thank Dr. Douglas Wily and his staff for taking such good care of her for the past year.
