Valeta Suggs Cox: Tabor City

1933 – 2024

     Born Sept. 14, 1933, Valeta Suggs Cox of Tabor City passed away on Oct. 8. She was 91.

     Valeta was a lifelong member of Old Zion Wesleyan Church and was seen by many as a living testimony of a Christian woman.

     She is survived by her children, Vickie Ewing (Scott), Nolton Cox, Wayne Cox (Connie), Alvin Cox (Yolanda), Vernon Cox (Crystal), and Bettina Davidson (Griffin); eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister Ala Sue Suggs Norris.

     She was preceded in death by her husband, Elbert H. Cox; parents Matthew Suggs and Beatrice Smith Suggs; a sister, Iona Suggs Johns; and daughter-in-law Vicki Hughes Cox.

     Valeta taught school in Columbus and Brunswick counties for 31 years in addition to working with her family on the family farm. She loved her Lord, her family, her church and enjoyed sewing, reading and gardening. In the last two years of her life, she was loved and cared for by the dedicated staff at Coastal Pointe Assisted Living & Memory Care in Shallotte.

     Funeral services were planned for 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 11, in Old Zion Wesleyan Church, Tabor City, burial following in the church cemetery.

     Visitation was planned for the hour preceding services in the church.
