As much as seven inches of snow has been reported in the Tabor-Loris Community overnight, leaving most primary highways slick, some secondary roadways covered with thick snow and ice with ruts left by previous motorists the best way of keeping on the pavement.

Public safety officials across the region are asking that those who don’t need to be on the roadways just stay where they are. High temperatures today (Wednesday, Jan. 22) are forecast to just barely break the freezing mark, with travel dangers likely to persist will into Friday, which is expected to be just a few degrees warmer.

Snowfall ended before daybreak in the TLC, with sunny skies expected around mid-morning. That, the National Weather Service said, will lead to at least partial melting of snow and ice on highways, which will freeze and leave areas of “black ice” on roadways with temperatures expected to drop to the low- to mid- teens tonight.

Snowfall led to scenic scenes throughout the region, many shared on social media. It also had some at work, necessary work, including public safety workers responding to auto crashes like a minor one near the Tabor City Public Library Wednesday morning; and town Public Works employees who were using shovels and a propane fueled torch to clear sidewalks downtown.

Look for updates here as events warrant, and more in the next Tabor-Loris Tribune in print and on-line.

A reminder, because of the inclement weather forecast this week’s newspaper was printed and distributed a day early, on Tuesday.
