Monday morning update
Defending himself from an “unprovoked attack,” a Lumberton man shot and killed his would-be assailant inside a Green Sea home Thursday night, Lt. Raul Denis of the Horry County Police Department said Monday.
Police will not identify the victim, Denis said, adding that the 22-year-old man who fled the crowded shooting scene Thursday night surrendered to investigators later.
Investigators determined that the shooting was “justifiable,” Denis said in a news release. Prosecutors with the 15th Circuit Solicitor’s Office agreed with that assessment, and will not prosecute, Denis said.

Friday morning post
Police believe they are close to identifying a suspect in a deadly shooting that took place during a game of cards at a Green Sea home Thursday night, an Horry County Police Department spokesman said Friday.
Kendale Jermain Herring, 29, who lived at a different address in Green Sea, died on the scene of the shooting, Horry County Assistant Coroner Tony Hendrick said.
Officers responding to the 9:30 p.m. call on Olive Drive in the Green Sea area, were lead to Herring by several people within a large crowd at the home, a report by Officer Joshua Morrison said. An Horry County Fire/Rescue team arriving just after police began rendering aid.
A bloody towel near the man seemed to indicate first aid was attempted before police and the Medic crew arrived. Paramedics soon told police that Herring had died, “and the scene suddenly erupted into a very volatile and emotional situation for all involved,” the report said.
At least one family member was “in a fit of rage” at a table where both the victim and a suspect “were playing cards,” the report said.
Police quickly learned their suspect was gone, Lt. Raul Denis said in a news release.
Anyone with information in the shooting is asked contact the HCPD Tip Line at 843-915-8477 (843-915-TIPS).
