Leona Spivey Lanier: Tabor City

1929 – 2023

     Leona Spivey Lanier of Tabor City died Thursday, March 2, in her home. She was 93.

Born Dec. 14, 1929 in Columbus County, she was the daughter of the late Dothan B. Spivey and Dessie Wright Spivey and the widow of Jacob Jerome Lanier.

She loved her church and her family, and she was the last charter member of Forest Lawn Baptist Church. She retired from Loris Hospital where she worked many years as a nursing assistant. After retiring, she volunteered at the Loris Rehab and Nursing Center (Wilson Senior Care). She enjoyed encouraging and spending time with the patients as she assisted them in participating in Bingo and other activities. She loved truly and was truly loved by all.

She is survived by three sons, Jerry Lanier of Tabor City, Frankie Lanier and wife Debbie of Green Sea, and Timmy Lanier and wife Phyllis of Tabor City; three daughters, Katrina Powell and husband Dale of Loris, Sarah Richardson and husband Willie of Greenville, North Carolina, and Donna Kearse and husband Bryan of Tabor City; two brothers, Donald Spivey of Tabor City and Charles Spivey of Fort Mill; a sister, Shirley Walton of Matthews; eight grandchildren; and fifteen great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by three grandchildren, Dwayne Powell, Joey Kearse, and Luke Lanier; and two brothers, Lavern Spivey and Ralph Spivey.

Funeral services were planned for 3 p.m. Sunday, March 5, in Forest Lawn Baptist Church with burial in the Wright Cemetery, on the Minos Meares Road, Tabor City.

Visitation was planned for the hour preceding services in the church.
