Henry Eldridge Benton: Nakina

1938 – 2023

     Henry Eldridge “Bun” Benton of Nakina died Friday, April 14, in the Columbus Regional Healthcare. He was 84.

     He was born in Columbus County, a son of the late Barcie Benton and Alma Gertrude (Long) Benton.

     Bun was a member of the Nakina Fire and Rescue for many years. He was a lifetime member of the Nakina Pentecostal Holiness Church, serving as a deacon, superintendent, and in many other ways.

     He was a farmer and loved working in his yard and had just retired at age 82 from Amerigas. In his 30 plus years with the company, he had seen ownership change from Campbell Gas Company to Cape Fear Gas Company, and finally Amerigas. Mostly, he was a loving and devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend.

     He is survived by two daughters, Kandy Ashley (Bud) of Leland and Terri Scott (Marty) of Fuquay Varina; a brother, Elwood Benton of Nakina; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a special nephew, Randy Reaves.

     In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Norman Benton; and one infant sister.

     Honoring Henry as pallbearers are Larry Fowler, Larrime Fowler, Lloyd Bryant, Rocky Bryant, Ernie Best, and Keith Thompson.

     Family planned to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 17, at Inman Ward Funeral Home.

     Funeral services were planned for 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 18, in Nakina Pentecostal Holiness Church, burial following in Gore Family Cemetery.
