Austin Sawyer, Sr.: Longs
1932 – 2023
Austin Sawyer, Sr. passed away on Sept. 8, at his home in Longs. He was 90.
Born Sept. 25, 1932, in Conway, he was the son of the late Burroughs Charles Sawyer and the late Bertha Richardson Sawyer Little. Mr. Sawyer served his country with courage and honor in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. After his military service he worked as a financial advisor with J. P. Morgan, Sears and Trans South until his retirement. Mr. Sawyer loved to play golf and was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include his daughter, Sharon Sawyer Walters; a son, Shepard “Shep” Austin Sawyer, Jr. (Linda); five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters Shirley S. Medlin and Patricia Sawyer; and best friends Ricky Livingston and Robin Fowler.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Sawyer was predeceased by his wife, Gedelle James Sawyer; brothers Tommy Gene Sawyer, Kenneth Sawyer, Sr. and B.C. Sawyer; and a sister, Joann Sawyer Barringer.
Memorial services were planned for 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, at Hardwick Memorial Chapel with Reverend Bill Wines officiating. Committal services will be private.
Family planned to receive friends during the hour preceding services at the funeral home.
