Keith Gordon Lay, Sr.: Tabor City
1928 – 2024
Keith Gordon Lay, Sr. of Tabor City passed away on Thursday, Feb. 15. He was 95.
Born April 19, 1928 in Tabor City he was the son of the late Fred and Betty Lay. He attended Wake Forest University where he graduated with a BS in Biology. After graduation, he proudly served in the U. S. Army and was stationed in Germany during the Korean War. His vivid memories of that time were often shared with his family and friends.
After his return to the States, he earned a master’s degree from the University of North Carolina and began his career as a biology teacher. He retired from teaching in 1992 from Tabor City High School at age 64.
Keith was a lifetime member of Buck Creek Baptist Church in Longs. His commitment to his faith and his church gave him the opportunity to serve in many capacities, including deacon, Sunday School teacher, and church trustee. His love for God, his family, and his church were evident in all he did.
Mr. Lay is survived by one son, Keith Gordon Lay, Jr. (Beth); one stepdaughter, Lisa Perritte (Danny); two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Lay and Ann Lay. He was Poppi to his grandsons, Grant Lay and Andrew Lay. He loved taking them for rides on the tractor and four-wheeler and planting a big garden with them each year.
In addition to his parents, Keith was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 44 years, Sue Taylor Lay; and his two brothers, Fred Lay and George Lay.
With deep affection and gratitude, the family thank Diane Johnson for the unconditional love and care she gave to our family. You blessed our lives and are forever a part of our hearts.
A service of Celebration and Thanksgiving for the life of Keith G. Lay, Sr. was planned for 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, at Buck Creek Baptist Church with Pastor Larry Allen officiating, committal services following at Buck Creek Cemetery.
Family planned to receive friends immediately following committal services.
