Mayon John “M.J.” Cox: Loris

1933 – 2024

     Mayon John “M.J.” Cox of Loris passed away on Saturday, March 16. He was 90.

     Born April 10, 1933, in Tabor City, he was the son of the late Ottis Cox and the late Letha Wright Cox.

     Mr. Cox served his country with courage and honor in the United States Army. After his military service he worked with Prince Chevrolet and Lay Fisher for many years. He owned and operated M.J.’s Superservice, loved golf, and in his later years worked with Horry Auto Sales until his retirement. Mr. Cox was a volunteer fireman with Loris Fire department for 50 years and a longtime active member of Loris First Baptist Church.

     Survivors include his wife, Cindy Mason Cox; three children, Gwen Stevens (Delane), Debbie Todd (Steve), and Jay Cox (Gemma); two step-children, Thomas Denius (Melissa) and Jamey Neff (Nikki); three grandchildren, Crystal Stevens, Seth Todd (Meredith), and Patrick Stevens (Kristan); four great-grandchildren, Hunter Harrelson (Lilly), Kamryn Rabon, Faylen Stevens, and Gavin Todd; five step-grandchildren, Jonathan Wright (Michaela), Christopher Wright, Reed Neff, Abbey Denius, and Austin Denius; and two step-great-grandchildren, Julian Denius and Emillio Denius.

     In addition to his parents, Mr. Cox was predeceased by his first wife, Evelyn Cox; and two siblings, Larue Cox and Lafaye Clarkson.

     Visitation was planned from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 19, at Hardwick Funeral Home.

     Funeral services were planned for 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 20, at Loris First Baptist Church with Pastor Dr. Louis Venable officiating, committal services following at Twin City Memorial Gardens.
