Shirley Jean Mew of Savannah, Ga.

1936 – 2024

     Shirley Jean Mew of Savannah, Georgia, loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother, passed away on Saturday, March 30. She was 87.

     Shirley was born in the Finklea community of Horry County, on May 12,1936, to James and Epidell Mew. Shirley moved to Tabor City at age 14 to live with her older brother and sister-in-law. Shirley attended Tabor City High where she enjoyed cheerleading, representing her high school as a majorette in the Columbus County marching band, and was honored to be crowned Miss Tabor City High.

     In 1956 Shirley was married to Jimmy R. Rogers, and graduated from Rex Hospital Nursing School in Raleigh. She worked as a registered nurse in Atlanta, Georgia, for more than 50 years. After retiring from Northside Hospital and Atlanta Outpatient, Shirley continued providing the same devoted and professional attention as a part-time caregiver into her early eighties.

     Shirley moved to Hickory to be closer to her extended family, eventually spending in her final year in Savannah, Georgia.

     Shirley was an energetic, passionate people person who loved to talk, laugh and who never met a stranger. She loved reading biographies and attending her children’s and grandchildren’s endless concerts and sporting events, where she was their biggest fan and cheerleader.

     Shirley was preceded in death by her mother and father, and eight siblings. She is survived by her brother, Billy; her three children, Kyle, Kipley (ex-wife, Tina Giffen) and Julie Kay; grandchildren, Ben(Julia), Daniel, Sam and Luke Rogers; and great grandchild, Ellis.

     A traditional funeral service is not immediately planned; a memorial service will be announced in the near future on Shirley’s Facebook page.
