James Raleigh McPherson: Chadbourn

1942 – 2023

     James Raleigh “JR” McPherson of Chadbourn died Friday, Dec. 1, in his home. He was 81.

     Born in Columbus County, he was the son of the late James Floyd McPherson and Letha Wilson Sellers. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and member of Beaverdam Original Free Will Baptist Church where he served as Elder and started the rails and ramps in the Beaverdam Community. He was employed at Federal Paper until his retirement.

     He is survived by his wife, Sue Long McPherson of the home; one daughter, Cindy Ponos and husband John “JP” of Wilmington; a son, James Ricky “Rick” McPherson and wife Jennifer “Jenny” of Seattle, Washington; one sister, Josephine Cannon of Nichols; a half-brother, James Wallace McPherson of Chadbourn; two grandchildren, Abigail McPherson and Kyra McPherson; three step-grandchildren, Nick Ponos, Grace Ponos, and Yanni Ponos; and special friend Zander Carland of Whiteville.

     In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Jerry McPherson.

     Funeral services were planned for 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5, in Beaverdam Original Free Will Baptist Church, burial following in McPherson Cemetery, Chadbourn.

     Visitation was planned for the hour preceding services in the church.
