John Jefferson Hardee, Sr.: Loris

1929 – 2024

     John Jefferson Hardee, Sr. passed away on Sunday, Jan. 7, at his home in Loris. He was 94.

     Born Dec. 29, 1929, in Loris, he was the son of the late Ellie G. Hardee and the late Lizzie Annie Hardee. He served his country with courage and honor in the United States Army.

     After his military service, he worked for 30 years as a life insurance agent and was the owner and operator of Hardee Used Cars, until his retirement.

     Mr. Hardee was a Shriner and a life member of Loris Lodge #205 A.F.M. as well as a longtime member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, and currently a member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church.

     Survivors include his wife of 74 years, Laphena Housand Hardee; four children, Danny J. Hardee (Roscia), C. Gene Hardee (Angela), John J. Hardee, Jr., and Kathy McDonald (Richard); three grandchildren, Christopher Daniel Hardee, Shannon Frazier (Ryan), and Michelle Weatherford (Britt); two great-grandchildren, Anna Claire Weatherford and Kyleigh Atkinson (David); and a great-great-grandchild, Millie Wilds Atkinson.

     In addition to his parents, Mr. Hardee was predeceased by three siblings, George W. Hardee, Roscoe Hardee, and Ozroe Watts.

     Funeral services were planned for 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church with Pastor Rodney Hord and Rev. Mack Hutson officiating, committal services following at Hardee Cemetery.

     Family planned to receive friends during the hour preceding services at the church.
