James Earl Hill, Jr.: Whiteville

1046 – 2025

     James Earl Hill, Jr. of Whiteville passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Sunday, June 1, at Lower Cape Fear Lifecare Angel House, Whiteville. He was 78.

     Jim was born to the late James Earl Hill and Annie Louise Thompson Hill on Sept. 15, 1946 in Columbus County. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, John Kenneth Hill.

     Upon graduating from Whiteville High School, he obtained his B.A. Degree from Wake Forest University and obtained his J.D. Degree from the University of South Carolina. He was a practicing attorney for 50 years and Columbus County Attorney for 29 years.

     Jim served his country honorably in the United States Army Reserves. He was a past Chairman of the Boys and Girls Home of North Carolina. Jim was an avid outdoorsman and he loved his beloved home community of Columbus County. He will be missed by many.

     Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 56 years, Dorothy Kay Haddock Hill of the home; sons James Earl Hill III (Tracey) of Blythewood and Jesse Haddock Hill (Jessica) of Whiteville; a daughter, Kalee Louise Hill of Whiteville; and grandchildren Jefferson Elijah Hill, Audrey Gray Hill, Anna Kay Hill and James Earl Hill IV.

     Family plans a public visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, at McKenzie Mortuary, Whiteville, a private family service with entombment following.

     In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in Jim’s memory to the Boys and Girls Homes of NC, 400 Flemington Drive, Lake Waccamaw, NC 28450.
