Charles Burnett Coleman: Tabor City

1941 – 2024

     Charles Burnett Coleman of Tabor City died Tuesday, Jan. 2, at McLeod Loris Hospital. He was 82.

     He was born Sept. 16, 1941 in Lumberton and was the son of late Hosea and Eloise Lancaster Coleman of Tabor City. He grew up on the farm in Cherry Grove Community of Columbus County.

     He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Fulford Coleman; two daughters, Kimberly Coleman Clontz of Tabor City and Greta Coleman Williford of Wilmington; two brothers, Winston Coleman of Tabor City and Ronald Coleman (Karen) of Lexington; a sister, Barbara Childers (Don) of Asheboro; grandchildren Coleman Cox Williford and wife Mackenzie of Wilmington, Jonathon Carrington Clontz of Havelock, Mary McKenzie Williford and fiancé Nathan Massengill and Lillian Belle Williford all of Wilmington; one great- grandchild, Asher David Williford of Wilmington; and several nephews and nieces.

     Burnett was a retired banker of 25 years. He was a faithful member of Tabor City Baptist Church serving as Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, Baptist Men’s Director, and Church Treasurer.

     Through the years, he was actively involved in the Jaycees, Rotary Club, Tabor City Chamber of Commerce (President 1988), Board of Directors for Columbus County Tourism Bureau (1998-2008), and Board Chair for Matthew 25 Center at Tabor City.

     Burnett was a 1963 North Carolina State University graduate and a member of the NCSU Wolfpack Club. He thoroughly enjoyed attending football games and watching the Wolfpack on tv with his family and friends.

     After graduating college, he served in the National Guard and started his career as an agriculture agent—which eventually led to his career in banking. Burnett found joy in serving others and helping them to achieve their goals.

     Funeral services were planned for 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5, in Tabor City Baptist Church, burial following in Myrtle Green Cemetery, Tabor City.

     Visitation was planned for the hour preceding services in the church.
