Irene Allen Holmes: Little River
1935 – 2024
Irene Allen Holmes passed away on Monday, Nov. 11, at her home in Little River. She was 89.
Born Jan. 26, 1935, in Johnson County, she was the daughter of the late John Daniel Allen and the late Florence Benson Allen.
Mrs. Holmes and her husband owned and operated the Coastal Motel in Little River until her retirement. Mrs. Irene was a dedicated member of Buck Creek Baptist Church for over 60 years. She taught the preschool Sunday school class at Buck Creek for over 30 years, was involved with both the WMU and VBS, and would always help out wherever she was needed.
She will be most remembered though as a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to all.
Survivors include her two daughters, Barbara “JoJo” Holmes Long (Danny) and Kay F. Holmes, MD (James L. Jones, MD, PhD); seven grandchildren, Christopher D. Long (Kelly Moore), Leslie Anette Long, Harrison Jones (Kathleen), Andrew Jones, Mitchell Holmes (Diana), Mallory Holt (Bradley), and Mollie Holmes (Matt); four great-grandchildren, Matthew Holmes, Jeremy Holmes, Kara Jones, and Emma Jones; special sister-in-law Louvenia Holmes (Billy); as well as many loving nieces, nephews, and extended family.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Holmes was predeceased by her husband, Charles Edwin Holmes; one son, Mac Arthur Holmes; her brother, John W. Allen; and her two sisters, Mary Lou Jones and Pauline Allen.
Funeral services were planned for 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, at Buck Creek Baptist Church with Pastor Larry Allen officiating, committal services following at Buck Creek Cemetery.
Family planned to receive friends during the hour preceding services at the church.
