Dorothy Rita DeFreest Smith: Loris

1942 – 2026

     Dorothy “Dottie” Rita DeFreest Smith of Loris passed away on Saturday, Jan. 17, at McLeod Loris hospital. She was 83.

     Born May 17, 1942, in Troy, New York, she was the daughter of the late Walter DeFreest and the late Bertha Wagar DeFreest.

     Survivors include her son, Jeffrey Martin Smith; daughters Laurie Ann Smith and Jean Marie O’Rourke; six grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

     In addition to her parents, Mrs. Smith was predeceased by her husband, John Barton Smith, Jr.; ten siblings, Walter DeFreest, George DeFreest, Clayton DeFreest, Irene Sousis, Shirley Minnafield, Caroline Simpson, Grace Radliff, Doris Paglia, Ruth Shaw, and Elizabeth Ratigan; and a son-in-law.

     Family planned to receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 26, at Hardwick Funeral Home.

     Funeral services were planned for 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27, at Catholic Church of The Resurrection, committal services following at Carter Cemetery.

     Family requests that memorials be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
