1932 – 2017
Dr. Oliver Jay Gould Barnett Jr., of Loris passed away Thursday, July 20 at his home. He was 84.
Dr. Barnett was born on Dec. 29, 1932 in Norfolk, Virginia, the son of the late Oliver Jay Gould Barnett, Sr. and the late Lou Glynn Cox Barnett. Dr. Barnett served his country with courage and honor in the United States Army.
Dr. Barnett received his undergraduate degree from Lynchburg College and earned his Doctoral Degree of Dental Surgery at Georgetown University School of Dentistry. He attended the Medical College of Virginia for two years and worked until his retirement as a dentist.
Survivors include his wife, Juanita Stephens Barnett of Loris; one son, Scott Barnett and wife, Jennifer; four grandchildren, Ryan Barnett, Jillian Barnett, Victoria Ritacco and Lauren Anderson; one great-granddaughter, Alexis Ritacco; step-son, Joel Stephens and wife, Esther; three step-daughters, Jan Alexander and husband, Alex, Nancy Grainger and Carol Stephens and many loving step-grand and great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Dr. Barnett was predeceased by his daughter, Beth Ann Barnett Anderson.
Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 24, at Hardwick Memorial Chapel with Dr. Louis Venable officiating.
